My name is Brian M. Curran, and in May 2025 I was hired by a general contractor to create millwork shop drawings for a residential reconstruction project located on Ole Jule Lane in Mattituck, NY.
Below is a review of the project, including the millwork shop drawings I drafted.
I have over 18 years of experience providing drafting services for construction projects. If you’re planning a residential renovation and need shop drawings, I’m available to help.

Project Overview
This project involved the reconstruction of an existing two-story residence while maintaining the original building footprint. The architectural design drawings included interior elevations that defined the required millwork throughout the residence, which formed the basis for my shop drawings.
The architectural interior elevation sheets showed the layouts for all the millwork items across the project, including kitchen, bathroom, closet, and built-in components.
The millwork scope included mudroom shelving and bench elements, kitchen and island millwork, dining and bar cabinetry, bathroom vanities, closet systems, and a built-in desk component.
Millwork Shop Drawing Development
For this project I worked from the architectural drawings provided by the Architect of Record. Those drawings showed the layouts for all the millwork throughout the house. My job was to take those layouts and draft them into a set of fabrication-level drawings that the millwork subcontractor could use for building the pieces.
The package ended up being eight sheets, covering plans, elevations, and sections for all millwork items in the house.
We also received CAD files for reference after a release form was completed. I used them as a starting point for my drawings, but the printed architectural design drawings were the set to be followed for layout and dimensions. The drawings also made it clear that field dimensions were the contractor’s responsibility, so any changes in the field had to be checked and carried into the shop drawings.
The kitchen window change was one of those situations. The layout shifted slightly, so I adjusted the kitchen portion of the millwork set to match the updated field conditions.
I also spoke directly with the millwork fabrication subcontractor during the process to go over field measurements that had been passed along by the general contractor. That helped clear up a few items before the drawings were finalized.
Kitchen Island Millwork
The kitchen island took the most time on this job.
It combined several different materials and components, so it wasn’t just a standard cabinet layout. The top was stone, supported by steel tube framing elements. The front fascia panels followed an approved sample, and there was a sliding door cabinet system also based on an approved sample provided for the project.
Inside the island, I detailed prefinished maple drawers and adjustable shelving to match the specified finish samples. Drawer runners were not clearly defined in the architectural package, so those were selected during the drawing process based on standard practice. Outlet locations were also built into the layout and tied into the electrical plan.
I detailed the island using multiple views so it could be built without confusion in the field. That included front, rear, and side elevations, a plan view, and a section through the unit.
