Masonry Shop Drawings | Libertyville IL

In March I was contacted by a general contractor regarding masonry shop drawings for an addition to the Islamic Foundation North Mosque located in Libertyville, Illinois. My name is Brian and I have 18+ years of experience providing drafting services for projects throughout the United States.

Below is an overview of the project, including the masonry shop drawings I created.

Project Overview

This project involved a new north wing addition to the existing Islamic Foundation North Mosque facility. The addition was designed as a two-story expansion intended to increase the building’s capacity and support future growth of the community.

For this project I was hired to create masonry shop drawings, which contractors frequently also refer to as CMU rebar shop drawings.

The reinforced masonry walls varied throughout the structure due to changing roof elevations. The highest roof elevation reached approximately 26 feet while the highest CMU wall extended to approximately 28 feet due to a parapet.

The walls were supported on a reinforced concrete foundation system and coordinated with structural steel framing and a steel roof structure.

Masonry Reinforcement Coordination

An important part of creating masonry shop drawings is coordinating reinforcing placement with the surrounding structural conditions.

For this project, reinforcing had to be coordinated at wall openings, lintels, bond beams, and steel framing, throughout the building.

The reinforced masonry walls called for #4, #5, and #6 rebar, totaling approximately 170 lb of #4, 15,414 lb of #5, and 5,496 lb of #6 reinforcing steel. The reinforcing was coordinated throughout the wall system, including vertical bars, horizontal bars, and joint and edge conditions.

Reinforcing also extended into the reinforced concrete foundation system through dowels tying the masonry walls into the structure below. During the project, one revision was issued as a change order to include these foundation dowels.

After the updated information was incorporated, the masonry shop drawings were resubmitted and approved.

Below is the masonry shop drawing package that was created for this project. The drawings were developed based on the contract documents and coordinated with the reinforced CMU wall system, including openings, lintels, bond beams, and foundation dowels.

Construction Progress

One of the most satisfying parts of my shop drawing projects is seeing the construction progress once work begins. To know my computer generated drawings are used for real world construction is where the satisfaction lies for me.

On this project, the CMU walls for the north addition were constructed in stages as the foundation work and structural framing progressed. As construction moved forward, the reinforcing layouts for the wall elevations shown in my shop drawings came to life in the completed masonry work.

The construction photos show the CMU walls after they were built and provide a good comparison to the original shop drawings included in the blog post.

At later stages of construction, the full height and overall configuration of the masonry walls became more visible.

Overall, the completed masonry reflected the wall layouts and reinforcing details detailed in my shop drawings.
