When I first started doing existing conditions surveys back in 2007, many architects called them building surveys. I don’t hear that term used often nowadays. Last fall I did a project, and when I posted it on YouTube I used the old term building survey in the title.
Since fall is here anew again, I thought I’d do a recap of the aforementioned building survey project I did last fall. I included the video below in my recap.
The Project Site
Known as ‘The Red Barn’, this remarkable 5,800 sf home sits high above the Hudson River in the storied community of Snedens Landing, which is part of Palisades, NY.
Here is a picture of the side elevation of the house at sunset.
With 6 bedrooms and 5 baths spread over three levels, it is very privately tucked away at the end of a 250-foot gravel drive. The property spans 2.2 acres across two lots, perched on an escarpment with sweeping river views.
Here is a picture of the Hudson River water view from the rear yard at sunset.
Originally built as a barn in the 19th century, it was transformed into a residence in the early 20th century and later expanded in the 1990s.

The result is a striking blend of historic character and modern design—soaring, open interiors filled with glass, seamlessly balanced with original details and the surrounding natural landscape.

The Existing Conditions Survey Drawings I Created
For this project I created as-built floor plan drawings, reflected ceiling plan drawings, electrical plan drawings, and exterior elevations.

The Video
