Millwork Shop Drawings Services

Architects and designers sometimes require wood wall paneling and ceiling paneling as part of their designs. Let me share one of my millwork shop drawing services projects for which I created wood wall and ceiling paneling shop drawings.

Millwork Shop Drawing Services

To give you a better sense of what my millwork shop drawing services look like in practice, here’s a recent project where I created wood wall paneling and ceiling paneling shop drawings.

I received a call from a contractor requesting millwork shop drawings, based off of the architectural drawing that is shown above. The scope of work included:

  • Wall cover planks on page A 303, Details 1 & 2
  • Shelves located on the same page, Details 5 & 6

The project location was a Restore Hyper Wellness & Cryotherapy office located in Eastchester, New York.

The Architect’s Contract Drawing

The architect’s contract drawing, sheet A-303.00, contained a lot of details. For instance, the wall paneling included 1×6 T&G poplar planks over 5/8″ plywood, planks to be stained w/minwax premium oil wood finish penetrating stain – semi transparent “slate” 284 one coat with polyurethane oil based sealant – clear satin finish one coat, all exposed edges sanded smooth and stained, and recessed light fixtures.

This project also included wood shelving. On the contract drawing it notes: 1′-0″ deep x 2″ thk, use “studlock” standard floating shelf bracket, and stain with varathane classic penetrating wood stain – “ebony” one coat with polyurethane oil based sealant – clear satin finish one coat.

My Millwork Shop Drawings

My shop drawings were a more detailed version of the contract drawing. I ended up creating two sheets for my shop drawings, where the architect’s details only filled less than one sheet.

I laid out and dimensioned all the geometry. I provided additional views, sections, details, and notes.

For example, I provided an edge detail, showing how the paneling was finish blocked on the edges to create a finished look.

I also showed a blown up detail of the vertical french cleats, how the recessed lighting framed into the paneling, the required locations of the wood blocking for mounting, and how the gypsum board would meet the paneling.

For the shelving I showed the anchor placements, The 3/4″ dia. cast iron pipe in black finish with threaded connector, and a blown up detail of the heavy duty studlock floating shelf bracket.
