Storefront Millwork Shop Drawings

When you think of a city storefront, you might not assume it would require millwork shop drawings as part of the construction process. But some storefronts do.

Millwork refers to wood products that are crafted in a woodworking shop (aka millwork shop), made from dimensional lumber. A “mill” is a facility that processes sawn logs into dimensional lumber. So the term “millwork” is a misnomer.

Millwork are wood pieces tailored to fit a specific space. They include a variety of elements such as built-in furniture, cabinetry, doors, molding, trim, wall paneling, and other custom wood features.

When storefronts are made of wood, and custom designed by an architect, they require millwork shop drawings.

Gioia’s Storefront

In this blog post, I’ll briefly highlight the storefront millwork shop drawings I created for Gioia’s Resturant that is located in Chicago, IL. I completed this project last year. Below is a picture of the storefront, fully constructed.

Elevation View

First, I began by drafting an elevation view of the storefront. This sheet which included the elevation, along with the other sheets I subsequently created, were based on the architectural design drawings that were furnished by the building owner’s architect.

Plan View

Next, I created a sheet with the plan view of the storefront. In this view I included more dimensions of the storefront, including calling out the angle of the storefront.

Section View

After that, I created a sheet showing section views of the storefront. On this sheet, I also included an enlarged corner detail so the contractor could fully understand what to build.

Additional Details

Lastly, I drafted a sheet with additional details. This included the bottom sash detail, divided lite detail, and header detail. I enlarged each detail so the contractor could clearly understand the storefront construction.

Contact

Millwork shop drawings are more than technical documents. They are a tool for achieving project success. “How do they do that?” you may ask. Well, they help architects, contractors, and owners stay on the same page, ensuring that designs turn out as planned. They accomplish this by showing in detailed drawing format, what will actually be constructed. These drawings show every nail, screw, wood species, dimension, shape, and more.

Therefore, for fabricators and contractors, investing in high-quality shop drawings is not just a necessity, it’s a competitive advantage that can set their work apart and drive lasting success. This is where DraftingServices.com LLC comes in: we create excellent millwork shop drawings.
